Sir John Barbirolli 's first professional engagement was in a theatre-pit at the age of fourteen. He played in cinema, symphony, and opera orchestras, and made a reputation in chamber music and as a solo cellist before he achieved his childhood ambition and became a conductor.
Sir John looks back over his life in music and indicates some of the principles by which it has been governed.
