12-The Penge Mystery
Murder
The Old Bailey-September, 1877
Four defendants were found guilty and sentenced to death. The learned Judge's conduct of their trial and his summing-up were strongly criticised by the legal profession. Seven hundred physicians and surgeons headed by Sir William Jenner signed a memorial disagreeing with the verdict on medical grounds. In the absence of a Court of Criminal Appeal the Home Secretary appointed three very distinguished judges to advise him. As a result one of the defendants received a free parden and the death sentence was commuted to imprisonment in respect of the others.
