Becky is presented at Court by Lady Jane, Sir Pitt having given her a diamond clasp-unknown to his wife. Her other magnificent jewels-given to her by Lord Steyne-she assures Rawdon, were hired.
Steyne finds young Rawdon a place at Whitefriars School where Rawdon takes him. Steyne visits Briggs and discovers not only that the sum Becky had borrowed from her was only half what Steyne had given Becky, but that Briggs has not been repaid a penny. Steyne arranges for Briggs to become housekeeper at one of his country homes.
Sir Pitt and Lady Jane warn Rawdon that Becky cannot be without a suitable companion, so Rawdon agrees to accompany her to any social gathering. Walking back from Gaunt House one night, Rawdon is arrested by a sheriff's officer.
Dobbin and Jos Sedley return from abroad and Jos promises to look after Amelia and her old father.
