The first Schneider Trophy air race was held in 1913 and won by a plane flying at an average speed of 46 miles an hour. The last race was won in 1931 at an average speed of 340 miles an hour.
Captain Biard flew in the race from
1922 to 1924 in planes designed by R. J. Mitchell, who later designed the Spitfire.
In 1925 he was flying a trial for the race at Baltimore in the Supermarine S.4. when, as he says, ' the next thing I remember was being at the bottom of the ocean.'
