Its Rise and Fall
Second of three programmes by Isaac Deutscher
It is the year 1924—the beginning of the Stalin era in Russia. But Stalin himself is not yet the Leader. The Bolshevik Party is not yet prepared to accept the dictatorship of a single man. The core of the party still consists of old underground revolutionaries who have spent most of their lives fighting against Tsarist autocracy. The triumvirate composed of Stalin, Zinoviev, and Kamenev rules the country. Yet Stalin's power is already far greater than that of his two partners. As General Secretary he is master of the party machine. Trotsky is still the Commissar of Defence. Throughout 1924 the campaign against him is at the centre of Soviet affairs.
This programme traces the story of Stalin's power in Russia from 1924 until the assassination of Trotsky in 1940. Produced by Laurence Gilliam
