By the will of the spiteful John Hern castle, the moonstone has befn bequeathed to his niece, Rachel Verinder , with instructions that it be presented to her on her birthday. With the diamond in his pocket Franklin Blake has journeyed to his aunt's house in Yorkshire to discharge this mission. On his arrival he is alarmed to hear of the presence of three mysterious Indians posing as jugglers in the district.
On her birthday Rachel receives the moonstone with delight; but on Lady Verinder's face there is only an expression of fear and foreboding.
