Ella and Sinclair's cocktail party had proved as futile and inane as Jeffrey had anticipated. The only really pleasant moment had come when, quite unexpectedly, he had encountered Marianna Miller there.
Back at the apartment, his sister Ethel and his niece Gloria, visiting New York on what Ethel termed' a spree.' had been awaiting them. As alwavs the mixture of Madge and Ethel had been an awkward one; Jeffrey had felt uncomfortably suspended between the world of his married life and the world of his childhood.
Then the telephone had rung. It was
Jim, announcing that he had something urgent to tell his father, and was coming to New York immediately.

4—Science for a Purpose
(i) Government Science
In this lecture Sir Edward Appleton considers the scientific activities carried out under direct Government support and control. An obvious instance is defence research on weapons of war. Work of this kind must proceed to a large extent in secret, otherwise much of its value would be lost.
Nuclear energy research is another official responsibility, for here the defence and civil interests are inextricably associated. But a modern Government assumes the further responsibilities of attempting to ensure work, health, homes, and food for everyone: all matters involving science.
