As the African territories advance to self-government, they face one of their most difficult undertakings-Ihe planning and rapid enlargement of their educational system and its adaptation to changing African needs. Nigeria has a particular problem to face here because of the different African races that make up her population. Administrators, civil servants, technicians, and above all teachers, are urgently needed-and yet education, and particularly higher education, is still in its infancy. This pressure of need and time affects the aim and quality of education: are standards being sacrificed to speed and will education be considered too much from a utilitarian point of view?
The speaker has recently returned from Nigeria where he was acting as visiting Director of Extra-Mural Studies at the University College of Ibadan.

The Church of Holy Trinity, Long Melford, is one of our great wool-Churches erected between the years 1472 and 1496. Its Lady Chapel is unique. The church had few equals in beauty and magnificence, and none of the Perpendicular period excels it.
The repairs are estimated to cost at least £10,000, and are caused chiefly through the ravages of the death-watch beetle. The money to be raised is far beyond the capacity of such a small and scattered rural population consisting of fewer than 1,800 adults.
