King Edward VII's Hospital for Officers has both single rooms and small wards, and all commissioned officers of the Forces are eligible for admission, whether serving, retired, or ex-temporary. Serving officers are entitled to free nursing and maintenance in the ward beds; the ability of other patients to pay is always sympathetically considered. The Hospital has its own consultant staff, whose fees are in accordance with the patients' means, and there is a Samaritan Fund for those who cannot afford to pay

The affairs of the Forsytes, and in particular Soames, the Man of Property, are reaching a stage where one waits, fascinated, for the next move. The eyes of Philip Bosinney, the young architect who is engaged to June, are now undoubtedly riveted upon Irene, the beautiful wife of Soames.
Soames is busy acquiring property for his new house at Robin Hill, designed by Philip Bosinney. which is being built for the sole purpose of taking Irene away from such town influences as Soames thinks are not fitting. He does not so far appear to have noticed the intrigue which is boiling up between his wife and Philip, and which is indeed the main topic of conversation in the Forsyte drawing-rooms ... and in particular at Timothy's house on the Bayswater Road.
