Edwin Clayhanger and his sis-ter Maggie could not account for their father's great grief over the death of old Mr. Shu&hions in the workhouse. Darius had returned from the old man's funeral in a state of collapse.
The doctor told Edwin that his father would do no more business as the brain was affected. Darius quarrelled with Edwin over giving him power of attorney but at last gave in. This did not prevent them having a violent quarrel over Darius's wish to grow mushrooms in the cellar. Edwin brutally dominated his father but later was rifled with pity and remorse.
