One summer when he was a boy on holiday at the seaside Leslie Paul d vided his time between swimming and watching a young performer in The pierrot troupe with whom he had fallen in love. He watched her day after day from the promenade, being unable to afford the price of a seat. But one day he heard her say ' There's that awful boy again.' So he avoided the pierrots, but he met his idol one day when the sea was really too dangerous for swimming.....

PaulNorton and Richard Norton, with their Uncle Bill, are spending part of their Christmas holidays walking along the border line from Carter Bar to Cheviot, intending to stay for a week in College Glen. On the way tlieir camp is raided and their food store disappears. When they arrive at Cheviot Cottage Uncle Bill goes out to call on the neighbouring Frazers, leaving the boys in bed. Richard, who is thirsty, wakes his brother, when suddenly they hear noises below. They go downstairs and find a man with a gun.....
