When Bach was writing his Cantata ' Aeolus ' for the name-day of one August Miiller, John Eccles was already seventy-five, in honourable retirement from the post of Master of the King's Musick, and Charles Avison was still in his teens.
Avison was a Tynesider who studied under Geminiani, and like his master wrote a good deal of concerted music for strings. This concerto is a fine example. Eccles on the other hand being a Londoner was tempted to the theatre and for twenty years wrote music for the London stage, once collaborating with Purcell, and often working for Congreve. After his Royal appointment he published many of these songs, including tonight's settings of Mathew Prior, Congreve, and John Dennis. The third song happily echoes Bach's cantata, in which the wind-god Aeolus is threatening to end the summer early by letting his tempestuous charges out of their bag. Then he is reminded that it would spoil Muiler's party-which is of course in August-and he relents. Michael Whewell

Appeal on behalf of the British Council for Aid to Refugees, by Miss Nathalie Benckendorff , a former displaced person
Contributions will be gratefully acknowledged and should be addressed to [address removed]
The British Council for Aid to Refugees was formed in 1950 to promote co-ordination between British voluntary organisations working for refugees. The Council maintains in London a hostel for forty-eight elderly refugees who are supported by voluntary funds from the general public, and there are also hostels in Bristol and Cardiff. The main work of the Council is the welfare of refugees who have come to this country since the war and who have made a contribution to our economy by their work in the undermanned industries. Refugees are advised on employment and personal problems, and where necessary financial assistance is given.
