Fela Sowande was born in Nigeria and studied at Lagos. He came to this country when he was twenty-nine, and for some years was musical adviser to the Colonial Film Unit. From 1944 until last July he was organist and choirmaster of the West London Mission at Kingsway Hall. He has written a number of works for orchestra and also for organ. His African Suite, which dates from 1948, has four movements: Joyful Day, Onipe, Lullaby, and Akinla. The first two movements are based on melodies by E. Amu , who teaches music at Achimota College on the Gold Coast; the last two movements are based on West African folk tunes.
