Escaping from Manuel's Lugarenos, Tomas Castro returns to the cave, where John Kemp and Seraphina still lie hidden. As the days pass the three endure unspeakable torments of hunger and thirst. The Lugarenos shout their taunts at Castro until, maddened by suffering, he rushes out to surrender to them. Given food and drink his courage and strength return, and, still declaring that he was alone in the cavern, with a shout of defiance he hurls himself to death in the ravine below.
After a battle between the Lugarenos and the Peons employed on the Riego estate. Kemp and Seraphina are rescued and rejoin Lion in Havana harbour where they find they have been given up for lost. Sebright the male informs Kemp that Captain Williams is ashore Kemp anxious to lose no time in getting Seraphina away, volunteers to go ashore in search of him
