Hoist's Suite in E flat, a delightfully forthright and tuneful work, is the first of two suites that he wrote for military band; Gordon Jacob has arranged it lor fun orchestra. There are three movements, Chaconne, Intermezzo, and March, and since they are all founded on the same phrase, Hoist directed that they should be played without a break.
For his Concerto for oboe and strings on themes of Pergolesi, Sir John Barbirolli has drawn on the eighteenth-century Italian composer's Stabat Mater , his act of twelve sonatas for two violins and bass, and an aria, ' Se tu m'ami.'
