(Continued in next column)
Mr. Slope, chaplain to the new, weak Bishop of Barchester—pursuing his ambition to get the control of the diocese into his own hands-has determined that the wardenship of Hiram's Hospital shall not go to Mr. Harding, father-in-law of his arch-enemy Dr. Grantly—as the bishop wishes—but to a creature of his own choosing. He has therefore angered Mr. Harding into a half-refusal of the appointment, and, representing this to the bishop as a complete refusal, has, with his consent, offered the place to Mr. Quiverful, vicar of Puddingdale.
But hardly has he done so than he learns that Mr. Harding's widowed daughter possesses a considerable private fortune. This discovery puts a new idea into his head; for Mr. Slope is a bachelor! He begins at once to regret the work he has done against Mr. Harding's interests, and to plot how he may undo it.
