Sibelius: Eightieth Birthday Concert
Symphonic Fantasia: Pohjola's
Daughter
3.16 app. Suite: Pelleas and Melisande
This suite is taken from the incidental music which Sibelius wrote in 1905 for a performance of the play by Maeterlinck.
3.40 app. Symphony No. 7, in C
Sibelius's last symphony is one of the shortest works in this form and is in one continuous movement. It is a work of serenity, repose, and contemplation.
4.2-4.17 app Interval
4.18 Symphony No. 2, in D
This Second Symphony was sketched not in Finland, but during a springtime holiday in Italy. The composer was living in a little villa in the hills overlooking a garden of flowers in bloom, while the surrounding woods were filled with the scent of violets. Some of the warmth of th's southern landscape is reflected in the opening of the Symphony and in the soft beauty of the Trio. The work overflows with melody, and the last movement contains one of Sibelius's most captivating tunes.
From the Royal Albert Hall, London During the interval Hubert Foss talks about the Seventh and Second Symphonies of Sibelius
