'On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring 'is one of Delius's most perfect works. It is a miniature tone poem epitomising his style as a composer and his poetic approach to music. According to Philip Heseltine, 'It is based upon a twofold melody; the first part is Delius's own, a sequence of phrases that echo each 'other like distant cuckoo calls, the second is. derived from a Norwegian folk song "I Ola Dalom" (In Ola Valley) which is to be found harmonised by Grieg in his Opus 66.'

for March, including Pouishnoff, the story of George Stephenson , and a memory of Dr. Ame, the composer of ' Rule, Britannia '. Presented by Leslie Baily and Francis Worsley. Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Mansel Thomas. Pages turned by Patric Curwen
For years the pages of Scrapbook have
* been turning, bringing to listeners their ever-fresh quality that has made these programmes among the most popular of any on the air.
Scrapbook itself has changed greatly in character since it started, and the 1942 series of Everybody's Scrapbook has produced at least two innovations.
The first of these has been the presentation of star soloists who have something interesting to say. In January Norman Allin talked about Mozart ; in February Isobel Baillie discussed Mendelssohn ; tonight Pouishnoff, the distinguished pianist, has his turn.
The second innovation concerns ' the dramatic presentation of the lives of great people, such as Brunel and Elizabeth Fry , together with the effective device of letting the great people—or actors impersonating them-introduce their own stories at the microphone.
