Cesar Franck followed the course laid down by Liszt in the symphonic poem and wrote several very notable works which vividly describe their programmes. Perhaps, the two most outstanding are ' The Accursed Huntsman ' and ' Les Eolides '.
The latter was composed in 1876. The music is based on some lines by Leconte de Lisle, of which the following is a free translation: ' 0 breezes drifting in the skies, sweet breath of lovely spring, who with playful kisses caress the hills and plains: 0 virgin daughters of Aeolus, lovers of peace, nature wakens at your songs.'

An appeal on behalf of clubs and hostels by Lady Cynthia Colville , D.C.V.O., Chairman of the Consultative Council of Voluntary Organisations set up by the Ministry of Labour
Hundreds of thousands of young girls now working in factories and on the land, many of them far from friends and families, are helped by the hostels and clubs to which this appeal is devoted. The work is done by voluntary organisations, and the societies of the Girls' Group have a total membership of over 800,000. The money will be divided amongst them, excepting only the Girl Guides' Association which does not appeal for funds.
