Of all the many gifted composers of opera-comique who flourished in Paris during the nineteenth century Offenbach was undoubtedly the most brilliant. His success in opera-comique was probably unparalleled in the history of this form of entertainment except for that of Johann Strauss.
His gay tunes and genius for satire will be well illustrated in ' Parisian Barcarolle He was Jewish by race and Catholic by faith, German by birth and Parisian by adoption. Having burlesqued the totalitarian rule of Napoleon III , he was still allowed enough freedom to compose the ' Couplets de l'opinion publique '.

Sir Donald Tovey
This afternoon Sir Adrian Boult and the Reid Symphony Orchestra will pay tribute to the gifts of the late Sir Donald Tovey as a composer. His Cello Concerto, which is one of his later and more important works, was written for Pau Casals, who gave it its first performance at Edinburgh on November 22, 1934, under the composer's direction.
The Reid Symphony Orchestra was, as many will remember, founded by Sir Donald Tovey in 1917. On this occasion the orchestra will be assisted by former members who are now members of the BBC Scottish
Orchestra.
