Even before the war John Green , who handles the talks on farming and gardening, had the foresight to see that at a time of crisis the ' backyarder ' would play an important part in feeding his family and so conserving food supplies. The ' backyard' talks came into existence, and since the war have been given weekly.
Reginald Gamble, expert on bees, has discussed preparations for winter ; John Green himself (he breeds pigs successfully) has discussed the problems and advantages of the cottage pig ; Anthony Hurd , farming expert, has brought Miss Kidd, well known in the poultry world, to the microphone, to discuss new problems of feeding ; and A. P. Thompson , editor of The Feathered World and a popular broadcaster and poultry-keeper, has brought W. P. Matthew , the Handyman, to tell listeners how to build a hen house.

This afternoon the first Association Football international of the war
-that between Wales and England-is to be played at Cardiff, and listeners will hear a commentary by one of the first (in all ways), of football commentators during the second half of the game. It will be readily imagined that with so many of those who would normally have been playing now serving with the Navy, Army, and Royal Air Force, it is not a representative international, but it is at least the first to be arranged this season.
