He has specialised in accompanying, and has appeared with such celebrities as Elena Gerhardt , John Coates , Casals, and Thibaud. From 192; until 1935, when he joined the BBC's staff of accompanists, he was a professor at the Royal Manchester College of Music.

Leslie Bridgewater , whose two Quintets and other light music ensembles have won such a popular place in broadcasting has now formed a Salon
Orchestra specially for broadcasting during the period of war. This orchestra consists of fifteen picked artists, all of whom are masters of their instruments. The ensemble consists of four violins viola, two cellos, bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, two pianos (one to be used chiefly for accompanying), and harp. Leslie Bridgewater , who is himself a brilliant pianist, will be the conductor.

Clarence Raybould is well known to listeners as a musician of eclectic tastes for his repertoire includes not only most of the masterpieces of classical- and romantic music, but also a great deal of contemporary music It will be remembered that early this year he conducted the first performance in its entirety of Hindemith's Mathis the Painter at Queen s Hall with great success.

It may well be claimed that Leon Goossens is the finest oboe player in the world. His peculiar beauty of tone and exquisite phrasing give him a place alongside such great artists as Kreisler and Casals. Since 1932 he has been principal oboe of the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Thomas Beecham.
John Cockerill , who is one of Britain's leading- harpists comes from
Manchester. He began his musical career at a very early age as a member of the Halle Orchestra under Hans Richter. For many years now he has been a harpist and director of the London Symphony Orchestra, and he has often broadcast in various light music combinations, such as the Lyra Quartet and the Leslie Brideewater Harp Quintet.

G.K. Chesterton's 'Lepanto' has often been voted one of the greatest dramatic poems in the English language. His powerful use of imagery has never been better than in this stirring poem. At the Battle of Lepanto in 1571 Don John of Austria headed a battle fleet contributed from the Italian seaports, the King of Spain, and the Pope, and freed Christendom from the greatest menace it had ever known. Lepanto was certainly one of the world's decisive battles, and Chesterton found in it subject-matter suitable to his extraordinary virility and poetic gusto.
