From a West-Country toncert hall
This concert represents the first of a new series of fortnightly public orchestral concerts, the programmes of which are essentially popular in appeal. The present one opens with Herold's Overture ' Zampa' and ends with Edward German 's march ' The Men of Harlech' from the Welsh Rhapsody. An item of exceptional interest will be to hear the BBC Orchestra with the BBC Chorus perform that ever-popular waltz Wine, Women, and Song' by Johann Strauss.
Each concert will be introduced by that best of comperes, Lionel Gamlin , who became celebrated for his personal touch in announcing and compering such winners as ' In Town Tonight ', ' Puzzle Corner ', and ' Music-Hail '. Gamlin, who is so cheery, so human and informal, will surely shine in a new line when he makes his debut today in the world of broadcast music.
