At the point where the Panama Canal widens into the Gatun Lake is the Island of Barro Colorado. Here the Smithsonian Institution of Washington has a biological research station, and Peter Scott and Tony Soper were able to film coatis, peccaries, tapirs, sloths, a kinkajou, howler monkeys, a boa constrictor, a five-foot iguana lizard, and many interesting insects. They also made a trip up the Chagres river and filmed crocodiles, egrets, masked ducks, and jacanas.
