I wonder how many of you know what a coelacanth is. Some of you probably know that it is some kind of fish. That is about all I knew until I started production of this afternoon's play by Jean McConnell. I think you will agree that when scientists and research workers cross continents and oceans to see it when they learn that one has been found, it must be a rather special fish.

But why is it so special? Why do photographers, reporters, and artists descend on the village of Urgan when news reaches them that Blackbeard (Gareth Jones) and his crew have hauled one up in their net, and why does Nicko (Sean Barrett) try so hard to keep it safe? All these things are answered in the play this afternoon. (Barbara Hammond)

[Starring] John Wayne with Ann Dvorak and Joseph Schildkraut in the film The Flame of the Barbary Coast
To the infamous Barbary Coast of the 1890s, with its gambling dens and dance saloons, comes a simple Montana cowboy. The impact was bound to be explosive - particularly when the favours of a lovely dance hostess are in dispute.
