The play takes place in the London home of Sir Francis Dearden and during a trial for murder in the Old Bailey.

Sir Francis Dearden is an eminently successful Queen's Counsel and one with a reputation for always getting his man. In court his logic is remorseless, his methods of cross-examination devastating.

At the moment he is prosecuting in a murder case which has aroused nation-wide interest. The evidence against the inoffensive-looking and harassed Metcalfe is formidable - but is entirely circumstantial. Even so, it is enough for Dearden. He finds the case distasteful, but he carries it on with his usual thoroughness. He is unaware that it is a case which may wreck his home life and he is unaware, too, of how misleading circumstantial evidence can be - unaware, that is, until he is suddenly called to account for an 'unguarded hour' in his own life.
