Continuing its season of programmes devoted to the 1960s, Radio 2 recalls the world's first major rock festival, staged south of San Francisco in Monterey in June 1967. Organised by producer Lou Adler , John Phillips (of the Mamas and the Papas) and Beatles publicist Derek Taylor , the three-day event provided the template for future outdoor festivals, though unlike Woodstock in 1969, Monterey was a non-profit affair. The programme features recordings from the festival that included the Jimi Hendrix Experience, the Who, Janis Joplin , Otis Redding , the Byrds, the Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, the Association, Canned Heat, the Buffalo Springfield and many other hip acts. Interviewees include Lou Adler , Monterey Pop film director
DA Pennebaker , festival performers
Country Joe McDonald , Eric Burdon and Ravi Shankar. Producer Des Shaw
