1/4. Paul Gambaccini recalls the life and music of soul giant
Sam Cooke , whose unmistakable vocals - a graceful and good-natured mix of gospel-inpired soul and pop - appealed equally to white and black audiences. Hits included You
Send Me, Only Sixteen, Wonderful World, Chain Gang, Cupid, Twistin' the Night Away, Shake and A Change Is Gonna Come. The series first aired in 2004, and begins with a look at Cooke's Baptist upbringing, his early gospel singing and his 1957 secular breakthrough US number-one hit You Send Me.
