2/3. Candi Staton profiles gutsy R&B, blues and jazz singer Etta James, whose turbulent and troubled life has found soulful expression in over 50 years of performances. The story shifts to the mid-60s, when James struggled with drug dependancy and produced one of her defining works, the 1967 album Tell Mama, which included the hit-single title track and its influential and much-covered B-side I'd Rather Go Blind.
The programme also recalls her 70s funk-inspired recordings, and features input from A&R man Tony Rounce, road manager Phil Kaufman and musical directors
Josh Sklair and Brian Ray.
