3/3. Angie Stone celebrates the Supremes, the Motown crossover hits trio whose dynamic R&B-pop melodramas dominated the American pop charts like no other native act during the 1960s. The story concludes with a look at the privileged status they enjoyed at Motown, and the search, in late 1969, for a singer who could replace retiring Supreme and upcoming solo star Diana Ross.
Among the hits from the new era - with Jean Terrell as lead - were the 1970 45s Up the Ladder to the Roof and Stoned Love, and, perhaps most memorably, the 1971 gem Nathan Jones. Featuring input from Supremes Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong , group manager Shelley Berger and former
Motown star Lionel Richie.
