Donald Macleod and scholar Christopher Stembridge explore Frescobaldi's life and work, focusing on his early years in Ferrara, where he absorbed the city's rich cultural heritage.

Donald Macleod is joined by scholar and performer Christopher Stembridge to explore the life and work of Girolamo Frescobaldi.

They begin with an examination of Frescobaldi's early years in Ferrara, where he absorbed the city's rich cultural heritage. Alongside excerpts from Frescobaldi's first publications, there is music by the predecessors and contemporaries whose influence rubbed off on him: Josquin Desprez, a former maestro di capella at the Ferrara court; Luzzasco Luzzaschi, Frescobaldi's teacher; Alessandro Grandi, Frescobaldi's younger colleague at the Accademia della Morte; Claudio Monteverdi, whom Stembridge sees as playing Handel to Frescobaldi's Bach; a trio of Neapolitan composers, Gesualdo, Mayone and De Macque; and a Venetian one - Giovanni Gabrieli.

Donald follows Frescobaldi on his single recorded excursion beyond Italy, to Flanders, in the company of the papal nuncio Guido Bentivoglio, then back to Rome and St Peter's, where he worked on and off for the rest of his life.

In a concert entitled Mirth and Melancholy, the Ulster Orchestra under Finnish conductor Tuomas Ollila-Hannikainen perform music by Weber, Beethoven and Stanford at the Ulster Hall, Belfast.

The programme begins with the overture to Weber's last opera, Oberon - a concert piece that has become much more popular than the opera itself, picturing a land of fairies and the spirits of air, earth and water - which is followed by Dutch pianist Ronald Brautigam in Beethoven's last Piano Concerto.

A performance of Stanford's Fifth Symphony concludes the concert. Inspired by Milton's L'Allegro ed il penseroso, it contrasts mirth and melancholy.

Matthew Sweet and Ronald Hutton, professor of History at Bristol University discuss the 2,000-year history of the Druids in Britain, looking at how they have been continually reinvented over the last 300 years by visionaries, radicals and fraudsters.

Crushed by the Romans in the first century AD, the ancient Druids left almost no reliable evidence behind. Because of this, succeeding British generations have been free to reimagine, reinterpret and reinvent them. Druids have been remembered at different times as patriots, scientists, philosophers and priests. They have been portrayed as corrupt, bloodthirsty and fomenters of rebellion. And during the 19th century, they dominated Romantic notions of British prehistory and identity.

Jez Nelson presents two of London's fastest-rising talents in concert at the Loop festival. With saxophonist Sam Crockatt and his quartet, featuring college friend and leading British pianist Gwilym Simcock, plus trio Blink, whose debut album has received critical praise. Blending clean melodies with free interplay, Blink is co-led by bold young pianist Alcyona Mick and French saxophonist Robin Fincker, with Paul Clarvis completing the trio on drums.

The Loop festival was put together in honour of the London-based collective's fourth birthday in February 2009. It has a DIY approach to performing, promoting and recording music and, as a result, has become a breeding ground for innovative musicians in the city.
