From the chapel of King's College, Cambridge, Stephen Cleobury conducts the BBC Singers in music for Good Friday by Poulenc, Jehan Alain and Judith Bingham.

From the chapel of King's College, Cambridge, Stephen Cleobury conducts the BBC Singers in a special concert for Good Friday. This most solemn day of the church year is marked with Poulenc's four motets for penitential seasons, composed on the eve of the Second World War, followed by three dances for solo organ, depicting life's joys, sadnesses and struggles, by the young organ virtuoso Jehan Alain, who was killed in action in 1940.

There is also the first performance of a new work by Judith Bingham which explores ideas about betrayal and loyalty to the faith, placing Biblical texts alongside words by the Elizabethan diplomat, explorer and spy-master Sir Francis Walsingham - a former student at King's College.

Poet Alison Brackenbury explores John de Critz's portrait in the National Portrait Gallery of Sir Francis Walsingham, whose writings composer Judith Bingham incorporated in her work See and keep silent. She responds to the famous spymaster with a new piece, illustrated by some of Walsingham's own writing, that reveals his importance and captures his character.

Walsingham developed the subtle art of international espionage in the service of Elizabeth I. He was very successful, uncovering the Throckmorton and Babington Plots. He maintained contacts as far afield as Aleppo and pioneered 'secondary spying' - sending diplomats to one foreign court whose real purpose was to gain information not about that country's intentions but those of others who also had delegations there.

Joan Bakewell explores ideas of belief with former Prime Minster and convert to Catholicism, Tony Blair. He discusses how he combines faith with politics and the invasion of Iraq.

Joan Bakewell explores areas of belief with authors, screenwriters, thinkers and other public figures.

She talks to former Prime Minister Tony Blair, who was a committed Christian throughout his premiership. His press secretary, Alistair Campbell, once said, 'we don't do God', fearing his boss would be considered a 'nutter' by the British public. Since leaving office, Blair has converted to Catholicism and talked more freely about the importance of his faith to him.

Joan hears how faith and politics have gone hand in hand for Tony Blair since his days at university; she hears how his faith helped him take on the job of leading the country; how he now views his decision to invade Iraq; and what he hopes the Tony Blair Faith Foundation will achieve. His role as envoy to the international Quartet involved in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process regularly takes him to the Holy Land, and Joan hears what impact these visits have on his own faith.
