Swing City
New series 1/3. In the first of threeprogrammes, Miles Kington visits the wide-open town that was, for nearly 30 years, the centre of a unique jazz style: Kansas City. Most of the jazz greats played and jammed there and some, like Count Basie and Jay McShann stayed, to help create a driving, riffing style of music that has continued to influence musicians all over the world. Today Kington visits the Jazz Archive at the University of Missouri to talk to its director, Chuck Haddix.

Metropolitan Opera Chorus and Orchestra, conductor Patrick Summers

7.50 Twenty Minutes: Rescuing a Threatened Species
Irving Finkel's job is looking after the Mesopotamian clay tablets at the British Museum. In his spare time he has begun to collect old diaries. Dentist appointments from the 1950s and the cost of a weekly shop might not seem the most enthralling material for historians to work on, but if no-one saves these unloved relics how will future generations understand our times?
