Bruch's ever-popular, warmly romantic Violin Concerto is contrasted with Shostakovich's Symphony No 10. The epic work perhaps heralded a new sense of freedom found in Russia after the death of Stalin, and portrayed all the strife and uncertain hopes of the mid-20th century.
