Under the director Graham Vick , Birmingham Opera Company has forged a groundbreaking mix of international professional opera production and street-level performances involving people who live and work in the city. Music Matters goes to Birmingham for rehearsals of their latest large-scale production: Monteverdi's epic opera Ulysses Comes Home. Plus a look at The Musical Madhouse - the first complete English translation of Les Grotesgues de la Musique, one of the composer Berlioz's most compelling and witty literary works, consisting of anecdotes, open letters and comments on the absurdities of concert life.

An uncompromising story of denial, set over a weekend in a remote Danish mansion, and containing strong language and descriptions of sexual violence. Originally one of the Dogme series of films by the Danes Thomas Vinterberg, Mogens Rukov and Bohr Hansen, Festen was made into a multi-award-winning adaptation for the Almeida Theatre, London, by David Eldridge. This radio version features the cast of that production. Introduced by director Rufus Norris.
