5/5. In 1871, the Société Nationale de
Musique was set up to promote the works of young French composers. By 1910 it had become heavily biased towards the music of the disciples of César Franck, and another group, the Société Musicale Independente, was set up in opposition. A few years later, Faur6 found himself in the rather bizarre position of being president of both groups. Presented by Donald Macleod. Violin Sonata No 1 in A, Op 13

Wolfgang Muthsplel Trio/John Stevens Tribute The trio led by the Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel, with Brian Blade (drums) and Matt Penman (bass), recorded at the Vortex club in London earlier this year. Plus a tribute to British drummer John Stevens , who died ten years ago this week. As well as being a fine player, Stevens was a huge motivating force on the domestic music scene from the late 1960s to the early 90s. He brought musicians together, found venues and festivals for them to play in, encouraged younger artists, and in doing so, became a key figure in the development of the European avant-garde scene in the early 70s. Presented by Jez Nelson .
