Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London.
A concert of sumptuous choral music by one of the most gifted composers of the time of Louis XIV in France, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, who died 300 years ago.
Presented by Lucie Skeaping.
Orlanda Velez Isidro and Olga Pitarch (sopranos), Paul Agnew, Jeffrey Thompson, Topi Lehtipuu and Marc Mauillon (tenors), Joao Fernandes and Bertrand Bontoux (basses), Les Arts Florissants Choir and Orchestra, conductor William Christie

Charpentier Requiem (Messe pour les Trepasses)

8.30 Twenty Minutes: The Princess and the Carpenter
A play by Michelene Wandor.
As well as producing a large quantity of sacred music and some celebrated music for the stage, Charpentier also wrote the first sonata ever composed in France. It was commissioned by Marie, Duchess of Guise-a cousin of Louis XIV and the worldly daughter-in-law of the devout Mademoiselle de Guise, for whom
Charpentier wrote much of his religious music. This is a fictional account of how the duchess asked the composer for a piece of music to shock the court. In a flirtatious tussle, hinting of intrigue, she plans an act of cultural revenge. Starring Miriam Margolyes as Marie and Sam Dastor as Charpentier. Director Julian May
