8.30 Twenty Minutes: The Princess and the Carpenter
A play by Michelene Wandor.
As well as producing a large quantity of sacred music and some celebrated music for the stage, Charpentier also wrote the first sonata ever composed in France. It was commissioned by Marie, Duchess of Guise-a cousin of Louis XIV and the worldly daughter-in-law of the devout Mademoiselle de Guise, for whom
Charpentier wrote much of his religious music. This is a fictional account of how the duchess asked the composer for a piece of music to shock the court. In a flirtatious tussle, hinting of intrigue, she plans an act of cultural revenge. Starring Miriam Margolyes as Marie and Sam Dastor as Charpentier. Director Julian May
