Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony-composed, on the surface at least, in a style acceptable to the Soviet authorities - was recorded in 1961 by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra under Karel Ancerl , and released on a budget label with a big red poppy on the sleeve. Jim Riordan reflects on how this recording came to represent for manythe ideological struggle of the 1960s.
