Music publisher and entrepreneur
Mitrofan Belyayev was a major influence in Glazunov's life, and his death dealt Glazunov a cruel blow. However, the composer weathered this setback to maintain his position as a leading force in Russian music. Today Donald Macleod introduces works written by Glazunov at the height of his powers, including the symphony which his pupil Shostakovich regarded as Glazunov's best- his eighth - and his violin concerto, which has proved to be his most popularwork.
