When Borodin died in 1887, leaving his musical affairs in chaos, Glazunov stepped in to undertake the huge task of completing Borodin's opera Prince Igor. Today Donald Macleod looks at the fashion for orientalism prevalent in Russian musical circles at the time, the profound effect the entrepreneur Mitrofan Belyayev had on Glazunov's career, and the controversy aroused by the composer's newly acquired skills as a conductor.

Contrasts" in which string quartets by Haydn are juxtaposed with those of 20th-century composers, and Ton Koopman directing Handel's first sacred oratorio La Resurrezione. Graeme Kaytalkstothe artists and Festival Director Peter Stieber , amid the halls, gardens and perfectly preserved Rococo theatre of the palace where the festival takes place.
