In the first of two programmes from Israel and the Palestinian territories,
Sarah Dunant reports on the crisis within Israeli society. After 50 years of conflict, why does Israel find it so difficult to achieve peace with the Palestinians and its Arab neighbours? For many Israelis, the continuing war with the outside world masks a more serious internal struggle which has yet to be realised - the showdown between Jewish orthodoxy and secular modernity which threatens to split the country in two.
