First broadcast last autumn, this "radio movie in music and sound", produced by Alan Hall , was awarded the" Special Jury Prize at this year's Prix Italia. "A monumental yet personal tribute to the city of London" was the jury's description. Monument is played by the ensemble George W Welch with a cast of voices taken from the BBC Sound
Archive, including radio announcers, bus conductors, newsreaders, commuters, weather forecasters, dance instructors, stockbroker, estate agent, high-rise residents, pub singers, tourists, children playing in the street and shoppers.
