That's Franz Liszt's description of the composer, critic, conductor and virtuoso pianist Hans von Bulow (1830-94).
Kenneth Birkin presents a centenary celebration of Bulow and his world, with music by Bulow himself, his friends and pupils and the composers he championed. The illustrations include excerpts from piano concertos by Liszt, Brahms and Tchaikovsky, symphonies by Beethoven and Mahler - and, alongside Bulow's own Nirwana, a work upon which it had a significant influence, whose premiere was conducted by Bulow, and whose composer ran off with Bulow's wife Cosima: Tristan und Isolde by Wagner.

Petersburg, where the piece was premiered in 1907. The great city of Kitezh on the River Volga faces destruction at the hands of the Tartar invaders but is saved through the gentleness, compassion and love for all living creatures of the peasant girl Fevroniya, the child of Nature.
