In the fourth of a series of concerts from the festival given last July in Birmingham and London, Los Munequitos de Matanzas from Cuba perform music from two Afro-Cuban religions, Santeria and Abakua.
The Munequitos first got together in 1952 and achieved instant and unexpected fame in Cuba. The group is more like a family than anything else. The leader, percussionist and dancer
Diosdado Ramos. is the father of the two principal dancers, and other members of the group are related by blood or marriage. They form a tightly knit unit with a strong spiritual bond which is reflected in their ensemble playing and brilliant improvisations. The Munequitos compose most of their own repertoire.

Alyn Shipton presents a six-part tribute to the American trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie , who died in January. 5: The Trumpet King
During the fifties, Dizzy was not only a regular member of the Jazz at the Philharmonic tours with pianist Oscar Peterson and trumpeter Roy Eldridge - he also led his own big band and small groups. Bass player Bob Cunningham recalls working with Dizzy as a member of his Quintet in the early sixties touring band.
