Founded in 1925, the National Radio Symphony Orchestra is Denmark's leading ensemble. Under its chief conductor
Leif Segerstam it has recently undertaken major world tours, together with recordings of music by Nielsen, Sibelius and Mahler. Meanwhile its principal guest conductor, Dmitri Kitaenko (formerly of the Moscow
Philharmonic) is recording a broad repertoire, including Stravinsky,
Prokofiev, and the most important figure in 19thcentury Danish musical life, Niels Gade. Gade was a friend of Mendelssohn and was also influenced by Schumann. His early work in particular has a distinctive charm and spontaneity. His rarely performed choral cantata of 1853, The Elf-King's
Daughter, opens tonight's concert. Its subject is the dramatic encounter between Lor OIuf, on the eve of his intended wedding, and the elf-king's daughter. Niels Gade
