Vaughan Williams's Fifth Symphony is the most quintessentially "English" of symphonies. A serene meditation inspired by Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, it was first performed at a Prom during the Second World War.
Ravel's dark-hued Concerto for the Left Hand was written for the disabled
Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein. It is played tonight by Pascal Roge, considered one of the finest interpreters of 20th-century French piano music.
