Some people miss the mountains and the trees, others understand as never before. NADINE SECUNDE Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen in a new production by HARRY KUPFER , conducted by DANIEL BARENBOIM In Harry Kupfer 's new staging, the immensely deep Bayreuth stage becomes the bare street of world history. Green laser beams shoot out to suggest the depths of the Rhine and red lasers pierce the blackness to conjure up Briinnhilde's rock.
Kupfer's and Barenboim's Ring provoked strong critical reactions for and against.
Patrick Carnegy sets the scene for the first of Radio 3's four broadcasts of the Bayreuth Ring in a programme which includes the views of some of those involved in this challenging interpretation.
