1: The Dream of Grotius
When the Dutch jurist, Grotius, published his Mare Liberum in 1609, Holland was beginning to develop its interest in the East Indies. Three-and-a-half centuries later an independent Indonesia, together with its neighbour the Philippines, has developed a complex and sophisticated legal case for archipelagic status based on its history of maritime trading and seaborn culture.

Kurt Schwitters was interned on the Isle of Man. Art historian Dr Klaus Hinrichsen met him there and he reflects on Schwitters's eccentricities, as well as on his surprising contribution to the spirit of refugee-camp life. (R)
