Each Easter Sunday afternoon, the Doge with his attendants went in solemn procession to the convent of San Zaccaria in Venice. There, Vespers of the Feast was celebrated with music from the choir and instrumentalists of the ducal Basilica.

Sir Peter Pears , who died two years ago today, was an artist who divided audiences by the individual timbre of his voice. As the life-long companion of Benjamin Britten , as a festival director, as a teacher and enthusiastic commissioner of new music, he had a unique influence on post-war musical life in this country.
