Sir Peter Pears , who died two years ago today, was an artist who divided audiences by the individual timbre of his voice. As the life-long companion of Benjamin Britten , as a festival director, as a teacher and enthusiastic commissioner of new music, he had a unique influence on post-war musical life in this country.
